After days of unbearable heat, people in Delhi and other parts of North India may finally get some relief. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that temperatures are likely to drop from June 14. The heatwave has been tough, especially in Delhi, where residents are struggling with extreme temperatures, power cuts, and water shortages. For the past week, temperatures have been touching 45 degrees Celsius, making it hard to go outside or even sleep at night. People in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and nearby areas are tired of the hot and dry weather. But the IMD says a western disturbance is likely to bring some rain, thunderstorms, and cooler winds, helping bring temperatures down.
Orange alert for June 13
The IMD has issued an orange alert for June 13 in parts of North India, warning residents of continued intense heatwave conditions. However, a western disturbance is expected to move in, bringing cooler winds, rain, and thunderstorms. This will likely lead to a gradual drop in daytime temperatures by around 2.4 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
Rain and thunderstorms ahead
- Uttarakhand is expected to receive light to moderate rain between June 12 and 18, with some areas likely to see isolated heavy rainfall.
- Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan may witness rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds between June 13 and 17.
- East Rajasthan could see thundersqualls with winds reaching up to 70 km/h on June 14 and 15.
- A dust storm is also likely over West Rajasthan from June 14 to 18.
According to the IMD, strong south-westerly winds carrying dust will sweep through many areas in the region over the next few days. The thunderstorm is expected to bring temporary relief in places like Eastern Rajasthan between June 15 and 17, while a more noticeable temperature drop may occur between June 18 and 20.
Heatwave continues in Delhi-NCR
Delhi and nearby regions such as Noida, Gurugram, and parts of Chandigarh and Jammu are still under the grip of extreme heat. Temperatures have crossed 45 degrees Celsius, with no major immediate change predicted before June 14. The IMD has maintained the orange alert for these areas, urging residents to take precautions.
Hot and humid conditions are likely to persist in the Delhi NCR region until the monsoon activity picks up. According to IMD’s forecast, Delhi will see a mix of heatwaves and occasional rainfall over the next 15 days.
While some relief is on the way, heatwave alerts remain in place across large parts of North India. People are advised to stay indoors during peak hours, stay hydrated, and follow IMD updates closely for any changes in forecast and safety warnings.
