A 26-year-old model, Sheetal Choudhary, was found dead with her throat slit in a canal in Kharkhoda near Sonipat on Monday. A day after, the police has said that her boyfriend, Sunil, has confessed to the murder.
Sunil, who is already married and has two children, was in a relationship with Sheetal for around six years, according to multiple media reports. The two met when Sheetal worked at his hotel in Karnal. According to the police, the two met on Saturday night in Ahar village, Panipat, where Sheetal had come for an album shoot.
Around 10:30 pm, Sunil arrived and took Sheetal to his car. They had a few drinks before a heated argument broke out. By 1:30 am, Sheetal made a video call to her sister, Neha, and told her that Sunil was beating her. Shortly after, her phone was switched off.
Police say Sunil stabbed Sheetal multiple times, killed her, and threw her body into a canal along with the car to make it look like an accident, media reports say. On Sunday, police found Sunil’s car in the canal, but Sheetal’s body was missing.
Sunil, meanwhile, got himself admitted to a hospital in Panipat and claimed the car had fallen into the canal. He said he survived by swimming to safety, but Sheetal drowned. Police grew suspicious, and upon further questioning, Sunil admitted to the crime.
On Monday, Sheetal’s body was found about 80 km away from Panipat, in a canal near Kharkhoda. Her identity was confirmed by tattoos on her hand and chest. The body also had several stab wounds.
Police have arrested Sunil. The exact reason behind the murder is still under investigation. Sheetal, who had worked in Haryanvi music videos, was also married and had a five-month-old baby. Her body has been sent for postmortem.
