BJP leader Kiran Choudhry was elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha bypoll from Haryana after the deadline for withdrawing nominations passed at 3 pm on Tuesday. Choudhry, a former Haryana minister, had filed her nomination for the bypoll last Wednesday. As the sole candidate in the race, she was declared elected unopposed.
Returning Officer Saket Kumar presented Choudhry with her certificate at 4:33 pm at the Haryana Vidhan Sabha secretariat. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was also present at the event.
When Choudhry submitted her nomination, four rebel MLAs from the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) extended their support to her. No other party fielded a candidate for the bypoll, which was held to fill the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Congress’s Deepender Singh Hooda after his election to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak. Hooda’s Rajya Sabha term was set to end on April 9, 2026.
The BJP nominated Choudhry, 69, for the bypoll shortly after she resigned from the Haryana Assembly, nearly two months after her switch from the Congress to the BJP in June. She was joined by her daughter and former MP Shruti Choudhry in making the transition.
Choudhry previously represented the Tosham constituency in the Haryana Assembly. Earlier, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced that his party would not field a candidate for the bypoll, citing a lack of sufficient numbers.
