People from across the country are mourning the loss of India’s tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, who died in San Francisco at the age of 73.
Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, sarangi virtuoso Kamal Sabri, and film stars Akshay Kumar and Kamal Haasan paid glowing tributes to Zakir Hussain, describing the tabla legend as a “phenomenon” and “one of the most beloved Indian musicians in the world.”
“I am completely heartbroken and devastated to hear about Zakir Bhai. Ustad Zakir Hussain was a phenomenon. He was indeed one of the most loved musicians the world saw,” Amjad Ali Khan wrote on X, adding that words are failing him.
Kamal Sabri called the maestro’s death a “great loss” for all forms of music. “He was an amazing musician who represented Indian music on the global stage for a long time,” he said.
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar expressed his sorrow, saying he is “pained” by the passing of the acclaimed, award-winning percussionist. “He was truly a treasure for our country’s musical heritage. Om Shanti,” he posted on X.
Posting a picture of Hussain with her father and herself, Kareena Kapoor Khan wrote, “Maestro forever”
Kamal Hassan took to X to say goodbye to Hussain. “Zakir Bhai! He left too soon. Yet we are grateful for the times he gave us and what he left behind in the form of his art. Goodbye and Thank you,” he wrote sharing a picture of them together.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu wrote on X, ‘’Mourning the loss of the Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain Ji, a towering figure in Indian classical music. His mesmerizing performances influenced generations; May his legacy continue to influence the music world.’’
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia paid tribute by posting, ‘’The bol of Zakir Hussain Ji’s tabla spoke a universal language, transcending borders, cultures, and generations.” He shared a clip of the legendary tabla player and wrote, “This clip defies how we will remember him and celebrate his legacy. The sound and vibrations of his rhythm will echo in our hearts forever. Forever resonating, Wah Taj! My deepest condolences to his family, fans and loved ones. Om Shanti!’’
