All schools and colleges in four districts of Tamil Nadu will remain closed on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Fengal. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more rain in the coming days. District Magistrate Lakshmi Bhavya announced the closure of all schools in Nilgiris district today. Similar measures have been taken in Villupuram, Cuddalore and Puducherry districts, where schools and colleges will remain shut. In districts like Ranipet, Salem and Tiruvannamalai, only schools will be closed. Specific areas in Kallakurichi and Krishnagiri have also declared school closures.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticised the central government for not allowing discussions on Cyclone Fengal’s impact in Parliament. “We are fulfilling our duty by assessing damages and submitting a report, but their refusal to respond is disappointing,” he told reporters. Stalin also addressed accusations by Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, emphasising the public’s appreciation for the state government’s initiatives.

The Chief Minister praised district officers, relief teams, and public representatives for their dedication during the crisis. “I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure normalcy is restored. Ground-level work must be completed promptly,” he stated.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected cyclone-affected areas in Dharmapuri district on Monday, reviewing restoration efforts for a damaged land bridge at Vathalmalai.

Across Tamil Nadu, 18 rescue teams, including 493 personnel, are conducting relief operations. In Villupuram district alone, 407 members from seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and eight State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are actively working. Meanwhile, 56 personnel in Cuddalore and a 30-member team in Tiruvannamalai are addressing flood and landslide emergencies.

Over 7,000 people have sought refuge in 147 relief camps across the affected areas. “A total of 147 camps are sheltering 7,776 people, with all arrangements made for water, food, and medical care,” the Chief Minister assured.

He also promised compensation for those affected by the cyclone, including damages to livestock, property, and loss of life.
