A car stuck in the flooded Old Faridabad Railway underpass led to the deaths of its two occupants. According to a police official, the driver disregarded barricades that had been set up to prevent entry into the inundated area. On Friday night, Viraj (26), a cashier at a private bank and Punyashray Sharma (48), the manager, were driving home to Greater Faridabad from Gurugram when their SUV got trapped in the underpass around 11:50 pm.
The XUV 700 ignored the warnings, entered into the flooded underpass. “A barricade was put up at the entrance of the underpass since it was waterlogged. The occupants of the SUV were told by police officers to take a different route,” police sub-inspector Rajesh Kumar said.
Sub-Inspector Kumar further added that the occupants of the SUV removed the barricades and proceeded through the underpass. “Once the car was submerged, its doors locked, leading to the drowning of the occupants,” he said.
Efforts by passersby to assist the stranded occupants succeeded in freeing them from the car, but Viraj was pronounced dead at the scene. Sharma was transported to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where he was also declared dead.
A colleague of the victims, Arjun Singh, mentioned that Viraj, who was relatively new to the Delhi-NCR region, may not have been aware of the road conditions.
Inspector Samer Singh, SHO of the NIT Faridabad police station, confirmed that the families of the deceased have been notified, and the bodies will be returned to their relatives following the post-mortem examination.
