The Indian government on Wednesday issued an advisory for its nationals and students in Canada urging them to “exercise utmost caution” in the view of “growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and violence in Canada”.

“In view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all Indian nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to exercise utmost caution. Recently, threats have particularly targeted Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community who oppose the anti-India agenda. Indian nationals are therefore advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential venues in Canada that have seen such incidents,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in its official statement.

The advisory comes a day after Canada issued a travel advisory for India and follows the tit-for-tat expulsion of envoys. All of the developments are coming in the wake of the diplomatic stand-off between the countries following Canada’s allegations on the involvement of Indian officials in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist.

Speaking in the Canadian parliament on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government had “credible allegations” linking the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June with the “agents of the Government of India”. Then the Canadian government expelled a top Indian diplomat.

India rejected the claim as “absurd and motivated” and in a rebuttal, expelled a Canadian diplomat.
