An encounter broke out in the Kulgam area of Kashmir on Wednesday after security forces faced intense fire during a search operation. The development comes less than a day after a deadly terror attack left 26 people — mostly tourists — dead and several others wounded in Pahalgam.

According to local media reports, security forces had cordoned off the Tangmarg area in south Kashmir after receiving inputs about the presence of terrorists. A gunfight was triggered after police personnel came under intense fire during the searches. Reinforcements have reportedly been rushed to the area.

Security has been increased across the Kashmir Valley following the deadly Pahalgam attack — with a joint combing operation involving the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police underway in the region. Additional checkpoints have also been set up on highways and other sensitive areas while quick reaction teams were deployed near key installation teams and tourist hotspots.

Meanwhile the Chinar Corps regiment of the Indian Army (which handles military operations in the Kashmir Valley) indicated that an encounter had also started in the Baramulla area earlier in the day. The operation began after “two to three UI terrorists tried to infiltrate through general area Sarjeevan at Uri Nala”.

“The alert tps on LC challenged and intercepted them resulting in a firefight…Heavy exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists, two terrorists have been eliminated, infiltration bid foiled by the security forces in the ongoing operation. Large quantity of weapons, ammunition and other war-like stores have been recovered from the terrorists. Operation is in progress,” the Army handle shared via X on Wednesday morning.
