Delhi experienced its coldest day of the season on Tuesday, with the maximum temperature recorded at 13.4 degrees Celsius, which was six degrees below the typical seasonal average.

Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh faced even harsher conditions, with Kanpur and Agra witnessing temperatures dropping to 1.1 and 1.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.

On Wednesday, the Safdarjung station in Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius, while areas like Palam, Ayanagar, and Lodhi Road registered temperatures of – 7.4, 5.0, and 6.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, IMD has predicted the continuation of cold day conditions, with Wednesday’s temperatures expected to settle around 8 degrees Celsius in the morning and reach approximately 16 degrees Celsius during the day.

As the bone-chilling cold persists across North India, people are facing significant challenges in keeping warm. Homeless people in Delhi were seen seeking refuge in government-run night shelters.

Amidst this biting cold, the efforts of these shelters are seen as crucial in ensuring the well-being and warmth of those without shelter during this harsh winter spell.

Mohit, a caretaker at the Anand Vihar night shelter, told ANI,”I work as a caretaker at the Anand Vihar night shelter. Here, we provide refuge to the homeless. We provide blankets, mattresses, beds, and food to people seeking refuge here. Our seniors bring them here. Our rescue team brings people found lying on the roads in the bitter cold.”

Another staff member at the Anand Vihar shelter said they were providing essential amenities such as blankets, beds, and hot water to ensure warmth and comfort for those seeking refuge. She also acknowledged the support of Akshaya Patra, an NGO providing simple meals for the residents.

Expressing appreciation, a resident seeking shelter at Anand Vihar praised the quality of amenities and conveyed gratitude to the Delhi government and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for their attentive care and support.
