Delhi experienced its coldest morning of the season on Friday with the minimum temperature dropping to 3.9 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average, the weather department said. The cold conditions disrupted road, rail, and air travel, mainly due to thick fog.
At least 23 trains heading to Delhi experienced delays ranging from one to six hours, affecting both the capital and neighbouring states, according to railway reports.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported zero visibility at Delhi’s Palam observatory near the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Simultaneously, Safdarjung Airport (VIDD) reported just 200 meters of visibility in dense fog at 7.30 am, PTI reported.
Parts of the national capital and its surroundings were shrouded in a thick blanket of fog, with the overall temperatures plummeting to 5.4 degrees Celsius during the morning hours.
Despite the foggy conditions, flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport were not severely impacted.
However, Delhi airport authorities issued an advisory, recommending passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information. “Low Visibility Procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are presently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” authorities said, ANI reported.
