The Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed 25 basements that were operating unlawfully as offices, coaching centres, or other business enterprises in various locations of the city from July 28 to July 31, as per the official data.

The report stated that 17 property owners received show-cause notifications from the civic authority during that time. It said that establishments in the areas of Patel Nagar and Ranjeet Nagar in west Delhi as well as Rajinder Nagar in central Delhi were the targets of the activity. In these three regions, there were 15 properties that were affected by the action, seven of which were located in Old Rajinder Nagar.

As per the report, 18 such basements were sealed on the Bara Bazar Marg area in Old Rajinder Nagar alone.

During that time, the MCD surveyed about 185 properties.

According to the city government, the basements were sealed off because they were being used illegally for commercial purposes. On Thursday, the MCD issued an order for a survey of all the structures in the city that have basements, exposed electrical wiring, and old barrels that are part of the combined drainage system.

The Rajinder Nagar incident, in which three IAS candidates perished as a result of flooding in a coaching centre’s basement, prompted the decision.
