Active COVID-19 cases in India has crossed the 5,700 mark taking the total number of positives to 5,755. As per Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data, four deaths have been reported. A nine-month pregnant woman died in Madhya Pradesh after facing intrapartum seizures, she was found COVID-19 positive later.  Kerala still leads the chart with highest COVID-19 cases so far with over 1800 cases.

With an increase of nearly 400 cases, COVID-19 in India has seen a 200% rise in cases in less than a month. Experts have warned of the high-transmissibility of the COVID-19 variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 which are protein mutations of JN.1. While symptoms are mild, it is mostly seen affecting patients with acute health conditions such as hypothyroidism, diabetes or respiratory issues.

State-wise case load

Border states, Kerala and Gujarat observed the maximum surge in COVID-19 cases. Leaping to 1806 cases, Kerala saw an increase of 127 cases with its death toll reaching 12. Experiencing a sudden uptick was Gujarat with over 700 cases experiencing a jump over over 100 cases from June 6 to June 7. Other states reporting high COVID-19 cases are Delhi (665), West Bengal (622), Maharashtra (577) and Karnataka (444).

Significant recovery was noted in Tamil Nadu which reported one death but relatively reduced its COVID-19 positives below 200.

COVID-19 death toll

The four deaths reported so far have been from Madhya Pradhes, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In Maharashtra, the deceased was a 63-year-old man with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, a past stroke, and thyroid issues. Kerala reported the death of a 59-year-old man who was undergoing treatment for advanced stage lung cancer. In Tamil Nadu, the victim was a 79-year-old bedridden man who had diabetes and suffered from severe COVID-related pneumonia and breathing complications. The total tally so far reports 59 COVID-19 deaths in India.
