LS Speaker refers complaint against Mahua Moitra to ethics panel

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has referred BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s “bribe-for-query” complaint against Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra to the Ethics Committee of the lower House. Dubey has accused Moitra of taking “bribes” from a businessman to ask questions in Parliament and urged Birla to constitute an “inquiry committee” to look into the charges against her. Moitra has hit back, saying she “welcomes any move against her after the Lok Sabha Speaker is finished dealing with pending charges against him (Dubey)”. (PTI)

Mumbai Airport update

This Mumbai Airport has been shut down for a critical maintenance work. Latest reports say that the flight operations have been suspended till 5:00 pm today. Both runwasy have been closed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. “As a part of CSMIA’s comprehensive post-monsoon runaway maintenance plan, both runways – RWY 09/27, and RWY 14/32 will be temporarily non-operational on October 17. This scheduled temporary closure is a part of CSMIA’s annual post-monsoon preventive maintenance plan. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has also been duly issued in this regard six months in advance,” a statement by the CSMIA spokesperson said.

Update on Imran Khan’s indictment in cipher case

A special court in Pakistan on Tuesday adjourned till next week the indictment of former prime minister Imran Khan in the cipher case. The case pertains to a secret diplomatic document that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Khan used to criticise his opponents for allegedly orchestrating his ouster from power in April last year. The document reportedly went missing from his possession. Khan’s party alleges that the document contained a threat from the US to oust Khan from office. (PTI)

Putin begins visit in China underscoring ties amid Ukraine war and Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a visit that underscores China’s support for Moscow during its war in Ukraine as well as Russian backing for China’s bid to expand its economic and diplomatic influence abroad. Ukraine says it strikes Russia’s military equipment near Luhansk

Ukraine’s forces made successful overnight strikes on Russian airfields and equipment near the cities of Luhansk and Berdiansk in territory controlled by Russian forces, Ukraine’s military said on Tuesday. “The Armed Forces of Ukraine made well-aimed strikes on enemy airfields and helicopters near the temporarily occupied Luhansk and Berdiansk,” the Ukrainian military’s communication department said on the Telegram messaging app. (Reuters)

SC announces verdict on same-sex marriage

Supreme Court’s five-judge Constitution bench to pronounce its verdict at 10.30 am on a batch of petitions seeking the right to marriage for members of the LGBTQIA+ community under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
