The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to select its new National President by mid-March after the completion of ongoing state-level organizational elections. According to ANI, the election process was said to be held in January but was postponed because of Delhi Assembly elections and other pending elections in multiple state units.
BJP’s National President election process
According to the BJP’s constitution, a minimum 50% of state units must elect their respective presidents before the party can move forward in choosing a new national president. Currently, elections have been completed in 12 out of 36 states, and at least six more state units will have to finalise their leadership before the election at the national election can take place.
BJP sources indicated to ANI that elections for state presidents in crucial states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are anticipated to get over in next week to 10 days.
The current BJP state president is likely to continue whereas district level elections in Uttar Pradesh will get over in the coming days and it will be followed by the selection of a new state president in a week.
Once all these processes are completed, the election for the BJP National President will be conducted.
Potential candidates for BJP National President
According to The New Indian Express, speculation regarding JP Nadda’s successor includes women leaders like from South India, Daggubati Purandeshwari, the BJP chief in Andhra Pradesh, Vanathi Srinivasan, that national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha and MLA from Coimbatore.
In addition to these candidates, Dharmendra Pradhan, Vinod Tawde and Bhupendra Yadav names are also in the list.
BJP performance under JP Nadda leadership
JP Nadda joined the post of BJP acting national President on June 17, 2019 and was officially appointed for the position on January 20,2020. He became the party’s 11 national president. Under his tenure, BJP competed in elections in 35 states and registered triumph in 16 states. Along with these achievements, the party successfully retained power in the Lok Sabha elections.
