The severe water crisis in India’s IT hub Bengaluru is worsening with every passing day. While the Siddaramaiah government has begun the crackdown on illegal water tanker networks, people in Bengaluru are resorting to extreme measures to survive the water shortage. The crisis is affecting everyone – from people living on streets to those residing in luxurious apartments. Prestige Falcon City located in posh Kanakapura Road area has issued, in fact, asked its residents to use paper plates and wet wipes and use water judiciously.
There are over 2,000 flats in this gated housing complex. The residents have also been asked to help in procuring water tankers. Meanwhile, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has issued helpline numbers. The civic helpline number is 1533. For those who want to lodge a complaint in connection with the drinking water issue, the BBMP has issued another helpline number – 1916.
Earlier on March 2, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had announced the state administration will take the control of all water tanker networks operating across the state in a bid to prevent the incessant use of borewell. The decision was taken to help in easing the severe water shortage in Bengaluru and stop illegal trafficking of water.
The situation has worsened in Bengaluru following the poor monsoon last year. Karnataka had announced a drought in nearly 200 taluks, which also included parts of the state capital. Mandya and Mysuru also witnessed drought. This worsened the situation in Bengaluru as it sources water from these two places.
