Two college professors were arrested by the Bengaluru police this week for sexually assaulting their student on multiple occasions. The duo and their friend — who also worked at the institute — had also blackmailed her and warned of dire consequences if she spoke to anybody about what had happened. The traumatised student had eventually confided in her parents while they were visiting the city — leading to a police complaint.

According to reports, Physics lecturer Narendra had first approached the student under the pretext of sharing academic notes. He had gradually built a friendship through constant messaging and eventually lured her to his colleague Anoop’s room before assaulting her. She was threatened with severe consequences. Biology lecturer Sandeep approached her a few days after the attack. He allegedly blackmailed her after the student turned down his advances — claiming to have photos and videos of her with Narendra. The complaint adds that he also raped her at their friend Anoop’s residence. The latter had also threatened the student with CCTV footage of her entering his room and sexually assaulted her as well.

A complaint was eventually Marathahalli Police Station in Bengaluru after her family approached the Karnataka State Women’s Commission. The trio were subsequently arrested and produced in court.

IIM Calcutta rape investigation continues

The developments came even as the West Bengal police continued its investigation into the rape of a woman on the IIM-Calcutta campus. Officials sought CCTV footage of the entire campus for July 11 as part of their probe. The police have reportedly found discrepancies in her claim and wanted to ascertain which places of the institution the alleged victim had visited during her stay. The investigators also wrote to the IIM Calcutta authorities seeking permission to question three of its students who were in touch with the accused after the crime. The alleged incident took place inside the boys’ hostel of IIM-Calcutta on Friday, and the accused student was arrested the next day based on an FIR lodged with the Haridevpur Police Station by the survivor.
