The deceased have been identified as Guneet (19), Rishabh Jain (24), Navya Goyal (23), Atul Agarwal (24), and Kamakshi (20), all residents of Dehradun, and Kunal Kukreja (23) from Himachal Pradesh, Indian Express reported.

The car belonged to Atul’s father, a Saharanpur-based firecracker businessman, who recently bought the vehicle on Dhanteras. Atul, had travelled to Dehradun along with six friends, and was allegedly driving the vehicle at the time, PTI reported.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the container truck was traveling from Kishan Nagar Chowk, while the SUV was en route to Dehradun from Ballupur Chowk. Police have also obtained CCTV footage showing the Innova moving through the city earlier, though at a normal speed.

According to police, as reported by IE, the speeding SUV attempted to pass a container truck near Kishan Nagar Chowk, but the driver misjudged the truck’s speed, believing he could pass safely after it had moved ahead.

The impact of the crash was so strong that the entire car turned into a mangled wreckage. Gruesome videos of the wrecked car are being circulated online.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who was on a trip to Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag, expressed his grief over the incident, describing it as “heart-rending”, news agency PTI reported.
