Tahawwur Rana, the alleged mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is expected to be extradited to India on Wednesday (April 9), according to media reports. This development follows a major breakthrough on April 7, when the United States Supreme Court rejected Rana’s plea seeking a stay on his extradition. The decision marks a pivotal moment in India’s long-standing effort to bring the 64-year-old to justice.
According to Indian government sources, a multi-agency team from India has gone to the US and all paperwork and legalities are being completed with US authorities.

The extradition process is reportedly being coordinated by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs. Upon his arrival in India, Rana is expected to be taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), where he will likely remain for several weeks as investigations proceed. Meanwhile, authorities in Delhi and Mumbai are making preparations to house Rana in high-security prison facilities.

Rana had filed an “Emergency Application For Stay Pending Litigation of Petition For Writ of Habeas Corpus” with US Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. However, this application was denied in March, and the full court reaffirmed that decision earlier this month.
India has persistently sought Rana’s extradition due to his alleged involvement in the coordinated terror attack that claimed the lives of more than 160 people in Mumbai in November 2008.
