Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday hailed the government’s app-based premium bus aggregator scheme as a significant step towards the fight against pollution. After inspecting the first fleet of buses launched under the initiative, Gahlot emphasised the scheme’s potential to transform urban mobility in the capital.

The Delhi Motor Vehicles Licensing of Aggregator (Premium Buses) Scheme, designed to reduce the reliance on private vehicles for intra-city travel and curb pollution, was officially notified last year. This initiative marks the introduction of the country’s first-ever aggregator model exclusively designed for premium bus services.

During his visit to the Rajghat Depot, Gahlot inspected the initial batch of premium buses operated by Uber. “I had the opportunity to inspect the first fleet of premium buses set to be rolled out under the Delhi Premium Bus Aggregator Scheme. With zero-emission, electric buses leading this initiative, we are making a giant leap towards a pollution-free Delhi under the visionary leadership of @arvindkejriwal!” he shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Under this innovative scheme, license holders will have the flexibility to determine bus routes based on demand. The fares will be dynamic, but will not fall below the peak fare of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) air-conditioned buses, ensuring affordability while maintaining service quality.

One of the key features of the scheme is its emphasis on digital transactions—only pre-booked, digital ticketing will be allowed, with no physical tickets issued. This approach not only modernises the user experience but also aligns with the government’s push towards a cashless economy.

The scheme is particularly targeted at the middle and upper-middle classes, encouraging them to shift from private vehicles to public transport. By offering a premium, comfortable, and eco-friendly alternative, the government hopes to significantly reduce the number of private vehicles on the road, thereby lowering traffic congestion and pollution levels in the city.

The launch of these premium buses represents a bold step towards sustainable urban mobility, reflecting the Delhi government’s commitment to creating a cleaner, greener future for its residents.
