Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (October 22) announced that the timely completion of 57 critical National Highway projects is a shared priority for both the Centre and the state government.

Sarma made this statement after attending a review meeting chaired by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, during which he emphasized the need to expedite key projects, particularly the early completion of the Jorhat-Dibrugarh highway.

“‘Building the road to progress. Today in New Delhi, I had the privilege of attending a review meeting led by Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @nitin_gadkari ji, focused on the development of 1001 kms of highway projects in Assam. Our collective priority remains the timely completion of 57 critical National Highway projects across various implementing agencies,” Sarma posted on ‘X’.

He also noted that the alignment for the Kaziranga elevated corridor has been approved and that the detailed project report for the Gohpur-Numaligarh Tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River is nearing completion.

Additionally, Sarma urged for the swift completion of the four-laning of the Baihata Chariali-Tezpur highway stretch and requested Gadkari to initiate re-tendering for the Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra, which has seen construction halted since early September.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister for Waterways and Ports Sarbananda Sonowal, as well as Assam’s MPs. Gadkari reviewed national highway projects in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Sikkim during the session.
