A new highway project promises to ease traffic woes in the Gurgaon region; the 43-kilometer Gurgaon-Pataudi-Rewari National Highway slated for completion by March 2025, according to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). With 60% of the work already completed, NHAI officials have indicated that the Wazirpur-Rewari section is expected to open by December this year, while the remaining stretch connecting the Dwarka Expressway to Wazirpur will be finished next year, TOI reported.
The Gurgaon-Pataudi-Rewari highway project, envisioned in 2018 to upgrade a two-lane state highway into a four-lane national highway, was initially estimated to cost Rs 900 crore and slated for completion by December 2022.
The foundation was laid in July 2020 by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, but construction, which began in November 2021, faced delays. In September 2022, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) intervened after environmentalists raised concerns over forest clearance, particularly the compensatory afforestation plan, which proposed planting trees 300 kilometers away in Panchkula, far from the highway’s affected green cover.
A key feature of the project is the construction of a 180-meter, two-lane flyover on the Dwarka Expressway, which will offer direct connectivity to NH-352W for traffic heading from Delhi and Gurgaon to Rewari.
The flyover is expected to provide significant relief to the heavily congested Delhi-Jaipur Expressway by creating an alternative route for vehicles traveling to industrial hubs like Manesar, Bilaspur, and Dharuhera.
NHAI officials remain optimistic about meeting the March 2025 deadline, although certain sections, like Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bharadwaj Chowk, are facing delays due to pending metro expansion plans. According to the project, the project aims to enhance traffic flow for both commuters and transporters, offering a smoother, faster route across this critical corridor.
