The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of six-lane access-controlled capital region ring road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) in Odisha under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) with a total capital cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced today.
Tackling Congestion in Cities
Currently, the Rameshwar to Tangi stretch on the existing National Highway is congested due to high traffic volume. The route passes through urban areas of Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and hence there are frequent bottlenecks. To address this, the government has proposed a 110 km long six-lane access-controlled greenfield highway.
“The project will benefit Odisha and other eastern States by diverting heavy commercial traffic away from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Khordha Cities. This will enhance the efficiency of freight movement, reduce logistics cost and drive socio-economic growth in the region,” the official statement said.
Connectivity and Trade
The project will connect with three National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65) and will have seamless links with important economic and logistics hubs of Odisha.
The upgraded corridor will also strengthen multi-modal transport by connecting a major railway station, an airport, a proposed multi-modal logistics park (MMLP) and two major ports and will improve the speed and efficiency of goods and passenger movement.
Growth and Employment
Once completed, the Bhubaneswar Bypass will play a key role in regional growth, improve access to major religious and economic centres and open up new avenues for trade and industry.
“The project will generate approximately 74.43 Lakhs person-days of direct and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment,” the statement added.
