India’s longest sea bridge, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, was visited by around 80,000 vehicles since it was opened to traffic at 8 am on Saturday, a PTI report said on Monday.
How many vehicles have visited the Atal Setu since its opening?
As per the PTI report, a Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said on Monday that on Saturday (January 13), a total of 24,083 vehicles used the sea bridge, also known as Atal Setu, while the figure was 55,367 on the second day.
The toll for a one-way journey on the 21.8-kilometer sea bridge linking Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle in Raigad, its neighboring district, is set at a minimum of Rs 250.
Police warns visitors
While the bridge has been met with great enthusiasm from the visitors, the influx of crowds has raised some safety concerns. Several videos surfaced on social media showing people stopping on the bridge to enjoy the view of the sea and even trying to access areas that could turn dangerous for those involved. People had also littered on the bridge and taken pictures, videos and made reels.
The Mumbai police took to X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, warning users against stopping on the bridge. “We agree Atal Setu is definitely a watch but it is also illegal to stop on it and click photos…You will face an FIR if you stop on MTHL.”
Actions taken against vehicles
A top Mumbai police official said action was taken against 122 vehicles on the first day and 42 on Sunday night.
The police has banned motorcycles, tractors, auto rickshaws, mopeds, animal-pulled carts and other slow-moving vehicles on the sea bridge, however, photographs of autorickshaw and motorcycles on the bridge have also gone viral on social media.
A viral video showing couples crossing the bridge via a ladder to descend onto a viewing platform has led certain netizens to urge the police to take legal action against them for engaging in a perilous activity.
Even the MMRDA has appealed people not to stop on the bridge. “Experience the joy of driving on India’s longest sea bridge having speed limit of 100 kmph. For your safety, we advise against stopping on the bridge for selfies. Drive responsibly and enjoy the journey,” it wrote on X.
