Roads in various areas of Himachal Pradesh were forced to close due to torrential rain, and the Met Office issued a warning for additional severe weather, thunderstorms, and lightning. A ‘yellow’ alert has been issued by the Shimla Met office for heavy rains, thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas on Saturday, July 6. It is further expected that the wet spell will continue till July 11.
Kangra, Kullu, Kinnaur, Mandi, Sirmaur and Shimla are the districts warned of moderate flash floods in the next 24 hours.
Roads shut!
Due to the severe weather conditions, 64 roads so far have been shut in Himachal Pradesh. 55 in Mandi, seven in Chamba and one each in Kangra and Shimla districts were closed for traffic and 34 transformers disrupted following the torrential rain, according to the Emergency Operation Centre.
Compared to an average of 27.2 mm, Himachal Pradesh has already experienced 59 per cent more rain in July, that is 43.2 mm. With a high temperature of 34.1 degrees, Chamba was the hottest place during the day, while Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti had the lowest nighttime temperature of 11.6 degrees.
Palampur was the wettest place in the state, logging 128 mm of rainfall, followed by Kataula (110 mm), Baijnath (95 mm), Jogindernagar (64 mm), Dhaulakuan (47.5 mm), Mandi (45 mm), Una and Dharamshala (40.2 mm each), Berthin (36.5 mm), Kothi (36 mm), Kufri (34 mm), Kangra (33.3 mm), Shillaroo (32.5 mm), Sundernagar (22.8 mm), Manali (22 mm) and Khadrala (21.6 mm), the weather office said.
