The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is an ongoing Indian Railways mission launched in February 2023 by the Ministry of Railways to redevelop 1,309 stations nationwide. The scheme aims to transform railway stations into modern, well-equipped hubs with improved passenger amenities, better traffic circulation, inter-modal integration, and enhanced signage.
As of November 2023, the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations across India has been laid. The redevelopment work is estimated to cost over ?24,470 crore and is expected to be completed in phases.
The redevelopment work on these stations is expected to be completed in phases over the next few years. Once completed, the upgraded stations will provide a more comfortable and convenient travel experience for passengers.
Railway stations transcend their role as mere infrastructure hubs; they stand as gateways to cities and regions, often marking the initial point of interaction for travelers. The increasing pace of urbanisation, a growing middle class, and the upswing in tourism have collectively contributed to a surge in rail passengers.
Here are some of the key features of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme:
Modern passenger amenities: This includes providing clean and hygienic waiting areas, restrooms, and food and beverage outlets.
Improved traffic circulation: This includes creating separate entry and exit points for passengers and vehicles, widening roads and footpaths, and providing adequate parking facilities.
Inter-modal integration: This includes providing seamless connectivity between railway stations and other modes of transport, such as buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws.
Upgraded signage: This includes providing clear and visible signage in multiple languages to guide passengers.
Sustainability: This includes using energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
Eco-friendliness: Rainwater harvesting systems, and green spaces
Ballastless tracks, which reduce noise and vibration
Roof plazas, where available, to provide additional space for commercial activities and passenger amenities
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is an important step towards improving the railway infrastructure in India and enhancing the passenger experience. This will also contribute to the economic development of the surrounding areas.
Railway station infrastructure has experienced strain, giving rise to challenges such as congestion, insufficient amenities, and subpar facilities. This mounting challenge has underscored the imperative for thorough redevelopment, with a focus not only on elevating passenger experiences but also on catalyzing economic growth.
