The Southern Railway has officially implemented a comprehensive update to its Time Table effective 01st January, 2026. This major revision marks a significant leap in operational efficiency, specifically focusing on the enhancement of train speeds and the modernisation of the passenger experience across the zone.

According to official updates, the improvements are the result of dedicated maintenance works, essential infrastructure upgrades, and track enhancements carried out over the past year. These developments are poised to deliver faster and more reliable journeys for the traveling public.

Major Speed Enhancements and Service Upgrades

The standout feature of the new schedule is the acceleration of 65 Mail, Express, and Superfast trains. This follows a successful 2025 period where 22 trains were already speeded up. Additionally, 14 Passenger trains will now operate on faster schedules starting this January.

“In Southern Railway, this revision signifies a major leap in improving train timings and significant enhancement in the speed of Mail/Express trains. Dedicated maintenance works carried out in the zone, essential infrastructure improvements and track upgrades are poised to bring about faster and more efficient train journeys for passengers,” according to Southern Railway press release.

Modernisation and Fleet Expansion

To meet growing demand, Southern Railway has introduced eight new trains and extended the services of four existing routes. The zone has also focused heavily on capacity and safety:

LHB Conversion: 25 pairs of Express trains were converted to LHB rakes in 2025.

Vande Bharat Augmentation: Seven Vande Bharat Express services were permanently strengthened with 40 extra coaches.

Capacity Increase: 46 Express and 27 Passenger trains were augmented with 62 additional coaches during the previous year.

The update also includes renumbering for 44 trains and the provision of experimental stoppages for 102 Express trains, ensuring better connectivity for various stations. With changes in service days for eight specific trains, passengers are advised to check the revised schedule for their journey.

“Major changes in the timings of Mail/Express and Passenger trains, along with the introduction of new services, extension of existing trains, provision of additional stoppages, speeding up of trains, and permanent augmentation of train services, have been incorporated in the new timetable of Southern Railway.”
