About 2.83 crore units of Rs 2,000 notes are still in circulation in India. In a statement on January 1, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that Rs 5,669 crore worth of Rs 2,000 banknotes are still in circulation throughout the country.
The Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 notes on May 19, 2023. At the time of the withdrawal announcement, approximately 3.56 lakh crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes were in circulation in India. As the public began exchanging the notes, the number of Rs 2,000 notes gradually declined in circulation.
“The total value of ₹2000 banknotes in circulation, which was ₹3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes was announced, has declined to ₹5,669 crore at the close of business on December 31, 2025. Thus, 98.41% of the ₹2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned. “ RBI said in the statement.
Is Rs 2,000 note still valid?
The Rs 2,000 notes are still valid in India. In the statement, the Reserve Bank said that the Rs 2000 banknotes continue to be legal tender.
How to exchange your Rs 2,000 notes?
At the time of the withdrawal announcement in May 2023, the Reserve Bank stated that the facility for exchanging the Rs 2,000 banknotes would be available at all bank branches in the country until October 7, 2023.
Furthermore, the central bank also announced a facility for exchanging banknotes at the 19 Issue Offices of the Reserve Bank (RBI Issue Offices). Any person or entity that still holds Rs 2,000 notes can exchange them at these RBI issue offices. The Issue Offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
Additionally, individuals can send their Rs 2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country to any of the RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts.
