A resolution has been passed by the Maharashtra council to rename seven local train stations of the Mumbai local train network. These new names will be submitted to the Union government for approval by the Mahayuti government. The resolution was moved by the state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil. It was adopted unanimously.
As per a PTI report, most of the stations’ are named in English, which has led to argument that they carry a colonial legacy.
Which local train stations’ names will be changed?
As per the resolution, Currey Road station’s name will be changed to Lalbaug, Sandhurst Road will be changed to Dongri. Besides this, Marine Lines will be renamed as Mumbadevi, and Charni Road as Girgaon. The renaming of Sandhurst Road will be effective on the Central Line as well as the Harbour Line.
Cotton Green will become Kalachowki, Dockyard Road will be known as Mazgaon, and King’s Circle will be renamed Tirthankar Parswanath. This follows Mumbai’s earlier renaming of iconic stations like Victoria Terminus (VT) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Elphinstone Road to Prabhadevi.
Meanwhile, Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in the council, queried the renaming of Aurangabad airport to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar airport. However, his request for discussion was denied by deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe, who suggested that the concerned minister address the query at a later time. Previously, the Maharashtra government renamed Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts in the Marathwada region to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv, respectively.
