A major fire erupted in a cluster of huts located close to the Harbour line railway tracks in Mumbai’s Dharavi area on Saturday afternoon. The fire led to a temporary suspension of train services on the affected stretch, officials told news agency PTI. The fire broke out around 12.30 pm inside Navrang Compound on the 60-foot road. Four fire engines and multiple firefighting vehicles were deployed to the scene, a civic official confirmed. “There is no report of any injuries to anyone,” the official added.

Trains halted

Given the proximity of the flames to the rail corridor, services between Bandra and Mahim on the Harbour line were halted as a precaution. Railway authorities also disconnected the overhead electric supply in the affected section to ensure safety.

A Western Railway spokesperson said, “The electric supply to the overhead equipment has been disconnected due to the fire incident in shanties adjacent to the Up Harbour line between Mahim and Bandra. Train services have been regulated till the situation is brought under control.”

Risk to passengers

Officials emphasised that there was no risk to passengers or trains, as all services had been stopped well away from the danger zone. The cause of the fire and the extent of damage are yet to be determined.
