The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will restore the original train numbers for all 60 pairs of passenger trains starting January 2025. This decision, made in compliance with directives from the Railway Board, marks a return to the pre-COVID-19 numbering system, replacing the interim ‘0’ numbering introduced during the pandemic.
The reinstatement includes passenger trains equipped with ICF, DEMU and LHB coaches, all of which will operate with their original numbers and maintain their pre-pandemic frequency. Of these, four pairs of trains will run from Tinsukia Division, 19 pairs from Lumding Division, 10 pairs from Rangiya Division, six pairs from Alipurduar Division (West Bengal), and 21 pairs from Katihar Division (Bihar).
Passengers can access comprehensive details on train schedules, timings, and stops through the IRCTC website and NFR’s official social media channels.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, special trains with adjusted fare structures replaced regular services. The restoration of original train numbers signals the end of these pandemic-era adjustments.
Covering over 6,400 kilometers of track across northeastern states, parts of West Bengal, and northern Bihar, NFR remains committed to passenger safety and operational excellence. In November, it bolstered safety measures by installing Thick Web Switch Point machines with clamp-type locking at 31 stations. Additionally, NFR has upgraded signaling systems in multiple sections to enhance efficiency and safety.
