In the financial year 2023-24, officials reported that 7,180 route kilometers of railway tracks were electrified, marking the highest achievement in the history of the national transporter. This surpasses the 6,565 route kilometers of tracks electrified in the 2022-23 fiscal year.
“We are rapidly progressing to accomplish ‘Mission 100 Percent Electrification’ and become the largest green railway network in the world. In the financial year 2023-24, 7,188 route km have been electrified, which is the highest electrification ever in the history of the railways. In the previous financial year, it was 6,565 route km,” a senior railway official said.
Record freight loading achieved by Indian Railways
In freight loading, the official stated that 1,591 MT were loaded in the financial year 2023-24 compared to 1,512 MT in 2022-23, marking a five percent increase. The additional 79 MT loading is the highest ever for the railways in any financial year, the official added.
In FY 2023-24, approximately 5,300 kilometers of new railway lines were laid, covering new tracks, doubling existing lines, and gauge conversion. This surpasses the 5,241 kilometers achieved in FY 2022-23.
The average daily track laying stands at 14.5 kilometers per day, marking the highest ever achievement, the official stated.
To enhance line capacity on high-density routes and accommodate more trains, Indian Railways has prioritized the implementation of automatic block signals. During FY24, the Railways upgraded 582 km with automatic signaling, an increase from 530 km in 2022-23.
