Indian Railways has flagged off the first pair of aerodynamic WAP-5 electric locomotives at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) for its expanding fleet of Amrit Bharat Express trains. The development was shared by the Ministry of Railways on Twitter, along with images of the newly flagged-off locomotives. These new locomotives promise significant cost savings by reducing the need for extensive redesign and are a key part of the Railways’ modernisation efforts.

Expanding Amrit Bharat Express Fleet

Indian Railways is set to expand its fleet of Amrit Bharat Express trains in the financial year 2023-24. These new trains will introduce a category of superfast passenger trains, aimed at providing more affordable and efficient travel options for the common man. The Amrit Bharat Express trains feature LHB push-pull technology, utilizing non-AC coaches for better speed and performance.

Key Features of the WAP-5 Locos

The new WAP-5 locomotives are equipped with the following upgraded features:

  • Redesigned Cab: Improving aerodynamics for greater fuel efficiency.
  • Real-time Information System: Allowing for precise monitoring and smoother train operations.
  • Remote Monitoring System: Enabling better diagnostics and maintenance through remote access, minimizing downtime.

These advanced locomotives are designed to enhance the performance of the Amrit Bharat Express trains, ensuring faster and more reliable services across the country. The initiative underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to improving both passenger experience and operational efficiency.
