Indian Railways has executed several measures intending to ensure hygienic and high-quality food for passengers during their journeys. These initiatives include sourcing meals from designated Base Kitchens which are well-equipped with modern facilities, as per a release by PIB. Monitoring tools like CCTV cameras have been used to administer the preparation of food. Moreover, Food Safety Supervisors have been stationed to make sure strict adherence to hygienic practices is adopted.

Enhanced surveillance for better quality and safety

To maintain a high standard of hygiene, Base Kitchens and Pantry cars get deeply cleaned regularly and a bi-weekly pest control program has also been initiated. The Indian Railways ensures that transparency is there in the details of the food packets, by using QR codes on its. Passengers can scan the codes and get access to all the details related to food like the packaging date and information about the kitchen. To ensure compliance with the food safety regulations, all the catering units must secure certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Indian Railways along with IRCTC officials conducts regular inspections of the food quality. Even third-party audits are also held by regular sampling, surprise checks to maintain good accountability.

Special regional cuisines

Rationalised menu has also been introduced inclusive of regional cuisines, healthy food options like millet-based dishes, diabetic-friendly options, and seasonal delicacies. A survey will also be taken for customer satisfaction so that the options can be modified or made better. The raw materials used in these food preparations are branded such as in the usage of dairy products, premium rice, and pulses.

Regular training is also organised for the catering staff with a special focus on customer service, courteous behaviour, personal grooming, and hygiene. In addition to these efforts, passenger awareness programs through email, SMS, and menu displays are also promoted so that passengers are aware of the food tariffs.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted while addressing the Lok Sabha that Indian Railways is striving to boost its dining experience by doing audits, regular monitoring, and giving preference to the feedback systems. Food items that are sold on trains have pre-notified rates to guarantee transparency and affordability. With all these slew of measures, Indian Railways showcases its commitment to deliver not just meals but a hygienic dining experience to its passengers too.
