The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has achieved a major milestone with the final breakthrough of the third tunnel of a section in Maharashtra’s Virar. The tunnel is a part of the 251-metres-long Vaitarna-JNPA section of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).
Last month, the Ministry of Railways conducted the first trial run of the freight train between Gothangam-Makarpura DFC network. The section passes through three districts of Gujarat – Surat, Vadodara and Bharuch districts.
Dedicated Freight corridor:-
The Ministry of Railways is constructing Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) to promote industrial activities and development of new industrial hubs and townships. The logistic sector will benefit with development of New Freight terminals, Multimodal Logistic parks and Inland Container Depots creating direct and indirect employment in the project-influence areas. The connectivity of Delhi, Mumbai and Howrah area will be further strengthened with commissioning of DFC project.
Status of DFC project
As of July 1, 2023, a cumulative distance of 2,196 kilometers, equivalent to 77.2 percent of the entire project in the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), has been put into operation. Among these, 1,150 kilometers have been activated in the EDFC, while 1,046 kilometers have been commissioned in the WDFC network.
Latest train operation on DFC network:-
- The Rewari-Dadri Broad Gauge double line electrified section (127 km) was made operational with the successful operation of goods trains from ICD Dadri to New Rewari on March 31, 2023.
- The New Khurja- New Khatauli BG single line electrified section (135 Km) of EDFC was commissioned on March 31, 2023.
- The New Dagmagpur to New Ahraura Road BG double line electrified section (23 Km) of EDFC was commissioned with successful train run on double line electrified track on March 31, 2023.
- The Bhestan-Sanjan BG double line electrified section (108 km) of WDFC was commissioned along with IR connectivity on March 31, 2023.
- The New Bhimsen-New Bhaupur section (25 km) of EDFC was successfully commissioned on February 28, 2023. With this commissioning, through connectivity of 752 km between Dadri-Khurja-Bhaupur-Chunar stations of EDFC was achieved.
