President Donald Trump lashed out at Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell again on Thursday, a day after the central bank opted to keep interest rates unchanged amid uncertainty stemming from Trump’s trade policies. On Wednesday, the Fed decided to maintain its benchmark interest rate in the 4.25% to 4.5% range — where it has remained since the last rate cut in December — frustrating the president, who has been pushing for further cuts to offset a potential economic slowdown triggered by tariffs.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump mocked Powell, writing: “’Too Late’ Jerome Powell is a FOOL, who doesn’t have a clue. Other than that, I like him very much! Oil and Energy way down, almost all costs (groceries and ‘eggs’) down, virtually NO INFLATION, Tariff Money Pouring Into the U.S. — THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF ‘TOO LATE!’ ENJOY!”
Meanwhile, the Fed defended its decision, citing increased risks of both inflation and unemployment, and emphasised the need for more clarity on the economic outlook before making further moves. Officials signaled caution, warning against prematurely slashing rates if Trump’s tariffs were to stoke inflation.
At a press conference following the rate announcement, Powell addressed Trump’s ongoing criticisms, asserting that the Fed’s decisions are based solely on economic factors. “We are always going to use our tools to foster maximum employment and price stability for the benefit of the American people,” Powell said. “We are always going to consider only the economic data, the outlook, the balance of risks — and that’s it.”
“Powell needs to go!”
Netizens swiftly reacted to Trump’s fiery remarks. One user wrote, “BUSTED! Jerome Powell playing politics with our economy AGAIN. They’ll tank the dollar, crush the middle class, and manipulate rates to prop up their puppet Biden — all part of the deep state playbook. But guess what? We see it now. Patriots know the Fed isn’t federal, and it’s.” Another echoed the sentiment, saying, “Privately owned Federal Reserve needs to be removed.”
Others chimed in with similar frustration. “I’m waiting for Trump to make him and the Fed Reserve irrelevant,” one user said, while another mocked the Fed Chair, calling him “Jerome ‘Inflation is Transitory’ Powell.” A comment read, “It’s time to end the Fed. Jerome Powell can go work in mother’s Britain. He does nothing for us here.”
One user fumed, “Fire this clown. He is playing politics with OUR economy!!!” while another predicted, “Trump is going to get rid of him soon.” Summing up the growing sentiment, a user declared, “Sad to see the Fed playing political games. Time to abolish the Fed and let the free market fix this mess!”
