H-1B visa system has recently undergone a complete overhaul, with the application fee soaring to $100,000. This change has sent shockwaves to new applicants, current visa holders, and countries alike.
A social media post of a manager on TeamBlind explains how the new $100k proclamation will literally be the end of the visa system especially in mid-size companies.
What does the explain?
The post shared on TeamBlind reads, “H-1B situation is getting real bad. I work for a mid size company : about 1500 org. Eng is about 1000. We have been asked to fully stop sourcing H-1B resumes. OPT employees are being given choice of moving to India or Canada. No more H-1B transfers. H-1B extensions at VP approval. It’s getting really bad out there folks.”
Why was the H-1B visa $100k proclamation introduced?
President Donald Trump signed an executive order introducing a $100,000 fee for companies applying for new H-1B visas on September 19.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended the move, describing the H-1B program as the “most abused” visa category in the US immigration system.
According to Lutnick, the hefty fee is meant to discourage businesses from depending on foreign workers and instead encourage them to hire recent graduates from American universities.
He argued that the added financial burden, paying both the steep government fee and employee salaries, would make it economically unfeasible for companies to continue prioritising international hires.
‘Best is to earn money & exit’
Netizens also posted their comments on the post. A user noted, “H1B is non immigrant temporary visa. We as Indians should start thinking about it in that fashion instead of planning to buy home and settle here forever & expect everything to go smooth.. best is to earn money & exit !.”
Another added, “No one owes H1b folks anything. Especially at the whim of the prevalent administration.”
“All middle mgmt is filled up with H1bs from india who migrated in last 5-7 years,” a user opined.
“H1Bs, I don’t get it. Why not take your skills to a country that appreciates you?,” questioned another.
“Jobs will move out of US. No company is gonna force themselves to hire US workers because of this,” a netizen stated.
