H-1B visas have recently become a major topic of discussion. With the new $100,000 application fee and claims from some Americans that H-1B visa holders are taking their jobs, the issue has gained a lot of attention.
On Team Blind, a user shared their tough experience after being laid off while on an H-1B visa. The post says, “Got laid off on H-1B. What to do? Just learnt that I have been let go. I am on H-1B. Wanted to see if anyone here can offer any advice from the visa perspective. What are the things I should be aware of from a laid-off-on-H1B perspective? Is there anything I should keep in mind while applying/interviewing for companies (again from a visa perspective)? When should I look to start the B1/B2 COS process? Thanks for your help.”
Layoffs in the US
In October 2025, the United States faced a huge wave of job losses, the highest number of layoffs for that month in more than 20 years. According to the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, US companies announced 153,074 job cuts, which is 183% more than September’s 54,064 and 175% higher than in October 2024.
‘Go back to your home country’
Netizens posted their opinion on what his next move should be. A user noted, “Go back to your home country.” Another added, “Your ancestors immigrated here that’s how you became a citizen. So don’t be dramatic and overvalue yourself. You were simply born in this country, your ancestors were the ones who went through all the struggles. As an American, you should respect the hard work of others, especially the legal immigrants who are working very hard.”
“Buy a one way plane ticket to India?,” wrote another. “Job market has dried up, Americans are not able to find work either. The Google hiring bar is not longer was it was. Go home and you will be a star in your home country,” stated a netizen.
“There are plenty of US citizens who got laid off too. Hiring managers are obligated to give jobs to citizens first. I feel for you I’ve been laid off multiple times i know it’s painful. I wish you the best of luck,” added a user.
