West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced a major development for the state’s IT sector, confirming that the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has approved the Phase-I building plan for Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) upcoming office campus at Bengal Silicon Valley.
According to the Chief Minister, the campus will span 20 acres, with Phase I set to deliver 9 lakh square feet of world-class office infrastructure, including an 11-storey tower, aimed at creating 5,000 new jobs. The subsequent phase will add another 15 lakh square feet, increasing the total direct employment potential to 25,000.
Once both phases are completed, the built-up area will total 24 lakh sq. ft., making it one of the largest IT campuses in the region.
This announcement comes amidst a larger state initiative to transform New Town, Kolkata, into a tech hub. Last month, the government cleared plans for a 25-acre information, technology, entertainment, and cultural park in a public–private partnership with HIDCO (West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation).
Named ‘Biswa Angan’ (courtyard of the world) in Bengali, the park is designed to host global artists and significant cultural events. As per party officials, the park is expected to bolster tourism and foster a creative ecosystem in Kolkata’s satellite city.
In a strong message to the project’s detractors, Banerjee asserted that Bengal continues to make steady economic strides. “To those who relentlessly malign Bengal and wilfully ignore the strides we are making, let this be a reminder of our capacity to deliver,” she remarked on X.
