Mahanagar Gas has resumed syupply of compressed natural gas (CNG) to pumps in Mumbai after two days of chaos.

“The rectification work of GAIL’s damaged main gas pipeline in RCF Trombay premises has been completed and gas supply to MGL’s City Gate Station, Wadala by GAIL has been restored. The gas supply to the affected CNG stations in Mumbai, Thane & Navi Mumbai has been restored,” read an official statement.

“Due to the stoppage of gas supply in CGS Wadala, and thereby the MGL pipeline network, few CNG stations in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai are not operational,” MGL said in a statement, which came after reports of widespread inconvenience to people in the city.

What was the issue?

MGL said the outage stemmed from third-party damage to GAIL’s main supply pipeline inside the RCF compound, which choked gas flow to the City Gate Station at Wadala, a crucial node for Mumbai’s distribution system. As a result, a large number of pumps in the city, home to roughly 130–140 CNG stations, were unable to operate through the day. This led to major inconvenience for autorickshaws, taxis, including app-based cabs, and many buses that rely on MGL’s CNG supply.

Fuel dealers confirmed that many stations have remained shut since morning due to insufficient pressure. The Petrol Dealers Association’s Mumbai president, Chetan Modi, said the disruption had crippled refuelling operations across several parts of the city.

“I have kept my own pump shut since morning as there is no (gas supply) pressure,” Modi said.

Mahanagar Gas (MGL) on Monday said compressed natural gas (CNG) supply to pumps in Mumbai will be restored by Tuesday noon. Nearly 60 per cent, or 225 out of 389 CNG pumps supplying the city, are currently operational, the utility stated.

Restoration Work Underway, Household Supply Unaffected

Mumbai CNG supply disrupted LIVE Updates: Many pumps remain non-operational

Mumbai’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) network faced widespread disruption on Monday, with major pumps in the city remaining closed since morning due to low gas pressure, a spokesperson for the local petrol dealers’ association said.

The shortage affected a large number of autorickshaws, taxis including Ola and Uber, and some city buses operated by public transport undertakings, all of which rely on CNG supplied by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL).

MGL explained that the disruption was caused by third-party damage to GAIL’s main gas pipeline located inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) compound. This damage impacted gas flow to MGL’s City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala, a critical entry point for CNG supply across Mumbai.

Mumbai has around 130–140 CNG pumps, including MGL’s own facilities. Many pumps have remained non-operational since morning due to reduced gas pressure, Petrol Dealers Association (Mumbai) president Chetan Modi told PTI.

“I have kept my own pump shut since morning as there is no (gas supply) pressure,” Modi said.
