In a move set to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth, the Government of Kerala has proposed the development of Ponnani Port, a non-major port, under the Sagarmala Scheme. The Kerala Maritime Board has submitted a proposal for constructing a Multi-Purpose Berth at the port, seeking partial financial assistance of Rs 20 crore from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

Exploring PPP Model for Cruise Tourism and Economic Growth

The proposed development aims to leverage Ponnani Port’s strategic location to boost cruise tourism and economic activities. The Government of Kerala is exploring the potential of developing the port through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, inviting expressions of interest (EoI) from private service providers. This initiative is designed to kickstart cruise shipping services that would connect Ponnani with various non-major ports and neighboring states.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, confirmed the details of the proposal in a written reply in Lok Sabha. The development of Ponnani Port aligns with the broader objectives of improving regional infrastructure and fostering economic growth through enhanced maritime connectivity.

This project is expected to play a significant role in advancing Kerala’s port infrastructure, potentially boosting tourism and regional trade, while also contributing to the broader goals of the Sagarmala Scheme.
