A Metro Railway spokesperson Kaushik Mitra said on Sunday (April 7) informed that the construction work for the underground Victoria station in the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor has commenced. He also disclosed that the Joka –Majerhat stretch of this corridor has now been operational, while the construction work of the Mominpur to Esplanade stretch is underway.

“The construction work of Victoria station has been taken up by executing agency Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). Barricading work of the area required for construction of this underground station and other preparatory works are almost complete,” he said.

Initially, diaphragm walls (D-walls) will be erected followed by the construction of station slabs using the Cut and Cover Top-Down Method. Machinery has already been deployed at the Victoria station site to facilitate the construction of these diaphragm walls.

Metro authorities conduct vibration impact study, health survey

Metro Railway authorities have conducted a vibration impact study to evaluate the potential vibration levels during both construction and operation phases.

Additionally, a health survey of the basement of Victoria Memorial Hall has been completed. Various measures will be implemented to mitigate air and noise pollution during the station’s construction. Experts from IIT-Guwahati will review the station’s design for validation.

As part of the construction process, approximately 29 trees have been earmarked for transplantation to Kamardanga near Beliaghata in north Kolkata. Necessary clearances are being sought for the tree transplantation, after which the remaining portion of the D-walls will be constructed. This stretch of Kolkata metro will include three other stations: Khidderpore, Park Street, and Esplanade.
