Kolkata Metro’s newly inaugurated underwater stretch, which connects Howrah to the state capital, has recorded around 24 lakh passengers commuting through it in the last two months, a statement from the Railway revealed.

Commercial metro services began on March 15 for two key stretches: from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade on the Green Line 2, and from Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby More) on the Orange Line.

Green Line 2 footfall

The Green Line 2 of East-West Metro, a part of which runs under the river Ganga, saw 24 lakh commuters hop on. The statement from the railway revealed that this helped the Metro railway generate Rs 3.40 crore just through that section. Howrah Metro station emerged as the busiest station in the last two months.

This station recorded a passenger count of 11.67 lakh, the highest among all the stations in this corridor. Meanwhile, on the Orange Line, over 55 thousand passengers traveled in the last two months, generating Rs 11.64 lakh in revenue for the Metro.

Howrah-Esplanade Corridor

India’s first transportation tunnel under the river is 4.8 km long, connecting Howrah Maidan and Esplanade consisting of a 1.2 km segment that runs 30 meters underneath the Hooghly River.

The Metro train service between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade in Kolkata was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year in 2023.
