As the capital city gears up to welcome the New Year, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced special crowd control measures at one of its busiest hubs.

Delhi Metro on Saturday (December 30) announced that the commuters will not be allowed to exit Rajiv Chowk metro station after 9 pm on New Year’s Eve, aiming to alleviate overcrowding concerns.

The decision comes in collaboration with police authorities who have advised restricting the exit from the station to manage the anticipated surge in footfall during the celebrations. However, the entry of passengers will continue until the departure of the last train on December 31.

Services on other lines as per usual schedule

It is emphasised that services on the rest of the metro network will maintain their regular timetable during this period. In a statement, DMRC Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal urged commuters to plan their journeys accordingly.

“The deployment will be at locations like Connaught Place, India Gate, Aerocity, Qutub Minar, Greater Kailash, Saket Mall, Netaji Subhash Place, Mukherjee Nagar area, Vasant Kunj Mall, EDM Mall, Pacific Mall, Champa Gali, Hudson lane, Hauz Khas and other crowded places. Traffic will controlled in the Connaught Place area after 8 pm,” he informed.

Traffic restrictions on New Year’s Eve

Moreover, Delhi Police has announced traffic regulations around Connaught Place after 8 pm on New Year’s Eve, deploying around 2,500 traffic police personnel and 250 teams to enforce checks against drunken driving for a smooth transition into the new year.
