Bengaluru Metro recorded 9.17 lakh passengers using its train services in a single day on Wednesday, breaking its ridership record, it wrote on social media platform X.
The previous single day ridership record of 8.26 lakh was witnessed by the Bengaluru Metro just a few days ago and had surpassed the ridership of 8.25 lakh recorded on Independence Day in 2022, The Indian Express reported.
Bengaluru Metro: Highest single day ridership
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) announced that a total of 9,17,365 passengers boarded the metro on August 14. The Purple Line recorded the highest ridership with 4.43 lakh passengers, followed by the Green Line, which served 3.01 lakh riders. The Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Interchange Station at Majestic managed a substantial share of this traffic, with 1.72 lakh passengers passing through its gates.
Metro officials attributed the record-breaking ridership primarily to the extended holiday weekend beginning on August 15, as many commuters hurried to railway stations and bus terminals to travel to their hometowns.
Earlier, on August 6, the Bengaluru Metro had seen a surge in the ridership due to heavy rain across the city.
The rising passenger volumes, especially during peak hours, are presenting challenges for BMRCL. With just 57 train sets operating across the lines, the system is approaching its capacity limits. BMRCL’s Managing Director, Maheshwar Rao, acknowledged these concerns and noted that passengers could expect some relief from overcrowding by May 2025. By that time, the Titagarh Rail System is expected to deliver 21 additional trains, which should significantly alleviate congestion.
