Dheeraj Gupta is taking Mumbaikars’ favourite roadside snack vadapav to the next level. Gupta is the owner and managing director of Jumboking, the franchisee that has 90 outlets primarily selling the Indian snack. The next three to five years are critical for Jumboking, Gupta says.

The company plans to take the burger substitute pan-India — 500 stores in three years and 1,000 stores in five. Revenues will flow accordingly— Rs 400 crore in three years and Rs 1,000 crore in five.

“The quick-service-restaurant business in India will explode. This year we will grow 65% (in revenue). And the company is already profitable,” said Gupta. Last fiscal, Jumboking made Rs 40 crore, which means in the next five years, Gupta plans to grow revenues 25 times.

Vadapav is the single largest-selling snack in Mumbai, with more than 2,00,000 pieces sold a day. Jumboking sells 20,000 pieces a day.

Gupta has already expanded to Pune, Bangalore and Delhi. The next level of expansion is in of top 20 Indian cities.
