Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, a key supplier for Apple, has announced a Rs 15,000 crore investment in Tamil Nadu, reinforcing the state’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies. The project, which is expected to create around 14,000 high-value jobs, will focus on next-generation areas such as battery technology and AI-led manufacturing systems.
A delegation led by Foxconn India representative Robert Wu met Chief Minister M K Stalin and Industries Minister T R B Rajaa in Chennai on Monday to formalise the commitment. Following the meeting, Rajaa took to X to describe it as the “largest ever engineering jobs commitment for Tamil Nadu,” calling on young engineers to gear up for new opportunities.
The state government, in tandem with Foxconn’s announcement, unveiled a first-of-its-kind ‘Foxconn Desk’ at Guidance Tamil Nadu. The dedicated platform will streamline coordination, accelerate project approvals, and ensure seamless engagement with Foxconn’s expanding footprint across the state.
Foxconn’s latest move is being viewed as a significant vote of confidence in Tamil Nadu’s industrial ecosystem, which already houses one of the company’s major iPhone assembly plants in Sriperumbudur. The upcoming investment signals Foxconn’s intent to go beyond assembly operations and strengthen its capabilities in high-value manufacturing, research and development, and technology integration.
Wu noted that Tamil Nadu’s strong infrastructure, progressive policies, and business-friendly approach have made it a natural choice for Foxconn’s next phase of growth in India. He also emphasised the state’s strategic importance in driving the company’s diversification into battery technologies and AI-powered production systems, both key pillars of Foxconn’s global transformation agenda.
Industry observers said that this new investment could be linked to the formalisation of Foxconn’s earlier $1.48-billion proposal through its subsidiary, Yuzhan Technology, which also aimed to generate about 14,000 jobs. Alongside its existing operations in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, where it is setting up a display module manufacturing unit, the new commitment further cements Foxconn’s long-term partnership with Tamil Nadu as it strengthens its India play amid global supply chain realignments.
