With the mercury levels going up in the national capital and heatwave engulfing every corner of it, the power demand in the city has also seen a surge.

Delhi, on Tuesday, recorded its peak power demand jump to an all-time high of 7,717 MW in the afternoon, as per Discom officials.

At 3:33 pm the power demand went to  7,717 MW, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC). This has broken all previous records.

Delhi’s last highest peak power demand was 7,695 MW and was recorded on June 29, 2022.

Delhi’s peak power demand to cross 8,000 MW

As per the discom officials, Delhi’s peak power demand is expected to cross 8,000 MW to 8,200 MW.

The city saw its peak power demand at 7,572 MW on May 20.

The peak demand, however, was successfully fulfilled, a spokesperson of BSES discoms BRPL and BYPL said.  BRPL and BYPL met their peak power demand of 3,404 MW and 1728 MW in their respective areas.

He mentioned that BSES has proactively arranged to meet the rising power demand by securing power purchase agreements and investing significantly in network strengthening. He added that approximately 2,100 MW of green power will play a crucial role in powering Delhi during the summer months.

A spokesperson from Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) stated that the discom successfully met the peak power demand of 2,225 MW in its North Delhi distribution area without any outages or network issues. The increased power demand is due to weather conditions prompting residents to use more air conditioning and cooling appliances.
