Bharti Airtel’s chief product officer Anand Chandrasekaran, who had joined the company in April last year from
Yahoo, has put in his papers. Bharti had created a new slot — chief product officer — for Chandrasekaran.
Chandrasekaran was assigned to improve the company’s data services, lead product conceptualisation, design and development across the consumer business segment and to adopt content-based data plans.
He is credited with launching Bharti Airtel’s music app platform Wynk, besides revamping apps such as airtel
money and myairtel, among others.
Confirming his resignation, Chandrasekaran said, “Following a successful association with Airtel, I have decided
to move on to pursue my entrepreneurial ambition, something that I always wanted to do.
I would like to thank Airtel for the opportunity to work for this exciting brand, and to support my decision of starting something on my own.”
A Bharti Airtel spokesperson also confirmed the development.
“After leading the transformation of product portfolio function at Airtel, Anand has decided to move on to pursue his own business venture. He was instrumental in giving the function a new direction and has helped build products such as myAirtel app. We thank him for his valuable contribution and wish him success in his journey ahead,” the spokesperson said.
Anand’s resignation comes at a time when Bharti Airtel is caught in a bind with its Airtel Zero platform, which enables customers to access certain mobile applications with no data charges. However, there has been a fierce opposition to it and the telco is being accused of violating the norms of net neutrality, something the company denies.
Anand joined Yahoo in 2011 as senior director for mobile products and worked on mobile search, yahoo answers and focused on local listings, content partnerships and maps, besides a member of the search leadership team.
Anand holds a postgraduate degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University and a BTech degree from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore and has also completed the global leadership and public policy programme at Harvard University.
