The US Embassy in New Delhi, in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), marked a monumental achievement: providing care to over 2 million people across 46 countries. The event, held at the American Center in New Delhi, celebrated this milestone with participation from U.S. government health officials, Manvendra Singh Gohil, known as the “Gay Prince of India,” and key leaders from LGBTQI+ communities and NGOs.
The celebration highlighted the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the US government’s unwavering commitment to the cause in India. Genessa Giorgi, the US Government Health Attaché in India, praised the longstanding partnership between the United States and India in combating HIV/AIDS.
For more than three decades, this collaboration has been supported by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), USAID, the CDC, NIH, and HRSA, working alongside the Government of India.
Genessa Giorgi commended AHF’s critical role in impacting over 2 million lives by supporting families, children, and marginalized communities, and by preventing millions of new infections through comprehensive strategies. Dr Sam Prasad Vazhamattam, AHF India’s Country Program Director, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic, emphasizing the need for collective efforts.
Manvendra Singh Gohil, Brand Ambassador for AHF, stressed the importance of inclusive access to life-saving drugs and the pivotal role of community leaders in driving change. The event also featured speeches, discussions, and a screening of the documentary “Keep the Promise,” which highlighted AHF’s impactful work.
Attendees included officials from the Indian Ministry of Health, international NGOs, foreign embassies, and the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO).
