A study done by Taiwanese researchers suggests a close relationship between patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and a history of suicide attempts. Women diagnosed with PCOS face extreme irregular period cycles because of several reasons like unhealthy diet and lifestyle choices. PCOS affects around one in 10 UK women which is now associated with a higher risk of suicide attempts, according to a significant study.
The research, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, examined data from nearly 9,000 women aged 12 to 64 diagnosed with PCOS between 1997 and 2012. The findings revealed an 8.47-fold higher risk of suicide attempts in those with PCOS compared to women with similar characteristics but without the condition. Further analysis by age groups indicated significantly elevated risks for adolescents, adults under 40, and older adults with PCOS.
Researchers suggest that concerns related to PCOS, such as potential infertility and body image issues, may contribute to the increased risk of suicide attempts. Additionally, body image concerns, including perceptions of obesity and acne, are common among adolescents with PCOS.
Young adults may face additional challenges like unemployment, financial difficulties, and relationship problems. The drop in the increased risk among older adults is speculated to be linked to improvements in PCOS symptoms with age.
While the study has limitations and cannot establish cause and effect, it aligns with previous research indicating a connection between PCOS and mental health issues. Dr Sophie Williams from the University of Derby, not involved in the study, emphasized the need for more research in the underexplored area of PCOS and mental health. Williams encouraged women with PCOS facing difficulties to seek help, emphasizing the availability of support through the NHS.
